The West Valley now predominantly Hispanic and African American has been changing over the past 50 years and the changes are noticeable and our Hispanic roots are very much alive in this part of town. Once a store named Mervin’s at Dessert Sky Mall now Mercado de Los Cielos is a reflection of the changing Hispanic population over the past 10 years in West Phoenix. Mercado de Los Cielos is now home to our Hispanic culture and everyday becomes a firm symbol of a home away from home for immigrants. Examples being weekend Banda, Cowboy dances, and other Hispanic events happening at the center of the mall most weekends. Desert Sky mall was considered a dying mall back in 2007 when the initially closed a lot of its retail stores. Mercado de Los Cielos replaced Marvin’s in 2008 and little by little market shops opened and Hispanics revived the mall and made it their own. Mercado de Los Cielos offers a full Mexican Inspired food court where you can enjoy Sonoran Hot Dogs, Liquados, and a variety of other rich foods. This made me think of the article by Koptiuch, “Cruzando Fronteras/Crossing Phoenix,” which emphasized that the boarder has already Crossed Phoenix.
