Mrs. Flores, Jennifer's father was a Army Ranger at the time of El Salvador's Civil war. Caused by the familiar to provide for the countries citizens. Poverty being one of the major issues promised to be resolved by the president for many years. In 1980 when the civil war began the army and government targeted anyone who support social or economic reform. Over the next 12 years a great deal of people perished. In 1981 the military murdered 1,000 people in the village of El Mozote . Situations like these where the U.S actually supported the Military to help the government gain back control is not easy to understand. Feeling from a country where Mrs. Flores job would have been to murder innocent civilians for trying to have a better way of life is not easy to imagine. People migrated from the overpopulated country to find a better life away from all the murders.
In Jennifer's family story her parents where escaping poverty and the threat of being murdered by being at the wrong place at the wrong time. Over 35,000 people died in the course of that 12 year Civil War and little was accomplished. Over the course of that war it is estimated that 25% of the population migrated. About 1.5 million Salvadorian citizens are estimated to have migrated to the U.S. and another 30,000 into Canada. May Salvadorans went and found refuge in neighboring countries. In 1985, it is estimated that 120,000 salvadorans were living in Mexico, 70,000 in Guatemala, 20,000 in Honduras, 17,500 in Nicaragua, and 10,000 in Costa Rica.
The U.S support came to the country at 1.5 million dollars daily to support the government. The U.S received a lot of criticism because of this but justified it as an attempt to control the spread of communism. I't was said that the rebel groups where receiving aid from Fidel Castro in order to strike a deal as soon as they gained control of the country.
